Journey Towards the Light

November 14, 2017 – Academy of Sciences
Sala dei Mappamondi – via Accademia delle Scienze 6, 10123 Turin

The light arrives
Direct or soft,
inclusive or explosive,
but it always arrives, no matter what,
even when you don’t see it or expect it
and it knows how to speak to your soul.

It expresses through its contrasts or delicate fusions the life in all its variations, in all its ways of being perceived, adapting to the sensitivities of each of us.

The Palace of the Academy of Sciences is an impressive 17th-century building in Turin with a surface area of 60,594 m². Its facade dominates the street of the same name, while one side borders the southwest edge of Piazza Carignano.

Originally intended to host the Collegio dei Nobili (a college for young heirs of the Piedmontese nobility), in 1787, by royal decree of Vittorio Amedeo III of Savoy, King of Sardinia, it became the seat of the Royal Academy of Sciences.

The Sala dei Mappamondi was decorated in 1787 by Giovannino Galliari, who depicted subjects related to mathematical, physical, and natural sciences on the ceiling, while the walls are almost entirely covered with wooden bookshelves dating back to the mid-19th century.
